The Bench of Snack Chaos
Apparently, "the grass is always greener" proverb is based on behavior that is innate and manifests itself before age 2.
All three kids had snacks (let's call them Snacks A, B, C); each kid wanted the other kids' snack. It was a grab fest. We experimented with this in two ways. First, we took Snack A from Kid 1 and gave it to Kid 2. While Kid 1 wasn't interested at all in Snack A while it was her own, she was very interested in it when it was perceived to be Kid 2's. After more grabbing we tried another tact. We took all three snacks, mixed them together into one pile (let's call that Snack ABC Mix), then redivided the ABC Mix into three portions. That way each kid had the identical ABC Mix. Even after that, the kids wanted the other kids snacks, even though the other kid had the exact same food.
There is no logic at age two.
